Nimalung & Kurjey festival in Bumthang

Nimalung festival in Bhutan.

The three day Nimalung & Kurjey tshechu festivals take place at Nimalung and Kurjey monastery respectively in Bumthang. Kurjey festival is for one day and is on the 5th July. The temple houses around 100 monks who are known for their talent in music. This festival is held mostly in the fifth lunar month (mostly July). The highlight of the festival is the unfurling of a nine meter high and twelve meters wide Guru Rinpoche’s Throngdroel. The masked dances are performed by the monks and are attended by the local people and tourists alike.

Your guide and driver will receive you at the Paro airport and drive to the hotel.

In the afternoon, visit Ta dzong, the national museum of Bhutan. Then visit Paro Rinpung dzong built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This dzong is an architectural delight and some scenes of the movie, The Little Buddha were shot here.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town.

In the morning, drive to the Paro International airport and fly to Bumthang.

Meet & greet at the Badbalathang airport with your guide and the driver. Then visit Jakar dzong built in 1667 by Nagi Wangchuk. Then visit Jambay lhakhang built in 659 AD by King Srongtsen Gampo of Tibet .

In the afternoon, visit Tamshing lhakhang established in 1501 by Pema Lingpa, Kencho Sum lhakhang. Then finally visit Kurjey lhakhang, where you can see the body print of Guru Rinpoche.

In the evening, explore Bumthang market.

Afternoon, drive to the beautiful Tang valley. Visit “The burning lake” where Pema Lingpa discovered the treasures hidden by Guru Rinpoche in the 14th century. Then visit Ogen Choling palace museum.

In the evening, drive back to Bumthang.

In the morning, drive to Trongsa. Visit the Ta dzong, an ancient watch tower which is converted to the royal heritage museum.

Then visit Trongsa dzong built in 1648 by Chogyal Minjur Tempa. It was the seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan. Both the first and second King of Bhutan ruled the country from this ancient seat.

In the afternoon, drive to the beautiful valley of Gangtey and Phobjikha. Visit Gangtey Gompa monastery founded in 1613 by Gyaltse Pema Thinley. The present Abbot, Kunzang Pema Namgyal is the ninth re-incarnation.

Then visit the crane information center.

In the evening, explore Phobjikha valley, the roosting ground of the rare black- necked cranes.

In the morning, drive to Punakha. On the way, visit Wangdue Phodrang dzong built in 1638 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This dzong was destroyed by fire in 2012.

Then visit Chimi lhakhang (Temple of fertility) built in 1499 by Lama Drukpa Kuenley (The devine Madman). He travelled throughout Bhutan and Tibet using songs and humor to dramatize his teachings of salvation through sex.

In the afternoon, visit Punakha dzong built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Punakha is the winter residence of Je Khenpo, the chief abbot of Bhutan.

Then hike to the beautiful Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Choling monastery.

In the morning, drive to Thimphu. On the way, visit 108 stupas at Dochula pass (3140 m) and view the panoramic Higher Himalayas.

Afternoon – visit national postal museum where you can print your pictures on the official Bhutanese stamps. Then visit royal textile museum and craft market.

Finally visit Tashichho dzong, the royal secretariat and the summer residence of chief abbot of Bhutan, the Je Khenpo.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

In the morning, visit memorial chorten, tallest statue of Buddha, Changangkha lhakhang, Takin preserve center and Sangay gang view point. Finally visit Dupthop lhakhang one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.

Afternoon – visit the painting school and excursion to Cheri monastery.

In the Morning, drive to Paro.

On the way, visit to Tamchog lhakhang built in 1420 by Thang Tong Gyalpo. He built 108 bridges across Tibet and Bhutan, out of which 8 were built in Bhutan.

Then hike to the Tiger’s nest monastery – 4 hours round trip. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche flew here on a back of a tigress.

Afternoon – visit Drugyal dzong built in 1647 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. It served as a defense fortress against the Tibetan invasion in ancient days.

Then visit Kichu lhakhang built in 659 A.D by the Tibetan king Srongtsen Gampo. He built 108 temples across the Himalayan region in a single day to pin the ogress to the earth forever. Six of them lie in Bhutan and the most prominent are Kichu and Jambay lhakhang in Bumthang. Kichu is said to pin the left foot of the ogress.
